This week at the Hole Gallery on the Bowery, you can revisit AREA, the coolest club in New York from 1983-1987. AREA was the club that captivated New York’s downtown art scene, the place where people like Madonna, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Chuck Close went to see and be seen. It was where Andy Warhol could be found in the infamous red bathrooms with his polaroid camera taking photos of the club-goers who just happened to be people like Debbie Harry, Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes, Grace Jones and Keith Haring. The bathrooms have been recreated in their full glory for the art show which is chock full of memorabilia, photographs and art surrounding the incredible artistic hub that was AREA.
